SERJobs’ Success Story - Waymon’s Story
At SERJobs, we believe every participant brings their own unique story, ambitions, and potential. Through our workforce development programs, we strive to equip individuals with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to pursue meaningful careers and long-term stability. Waymon R. is a recent participant whose curiosity, determination, and willingness to learn are guiding him toward a promising future.
“My name is Waymon Robinson, and I’m 20 years old. I’m the third Waymon in my family, after my father and grandfather. Growing up in Houston, life was stable. I wasn’t spoiled, but I also didn’t experience struggles. As a kid I was naturally curious and creative. I spent most of my time building with Legos. At first I would follow the instructions, but after finishing the original design, I would take everything apart and build something new using my own ideas. Looking back, that mindset of learning the system first and then creating my own path reflects how I approach life today.
As I got older, I started thinking more seriously about my future. I began college and eventually earned my associate degree, but the process wasn’t easy. During my first semester I tried to balance multiple responsibilities at once. I worked several jobs while attending school and managing personal commitments. Eventually I realized I was spreading myself too thin and needed to refocus. I stepped away from those jobs and relationships so I could concentrate on finishing my education and figuring out the best direction for my career. While exploring different opportunities, I discovered SER Jobs for Progress while searching for training programs on Google. I was initially interested in the CDL program, but after speaking with the staff, I learned about other opportunities available. Even though my situation was a little different since I was already attending college, the team still encouraged me to participate in the JRT (Job Readiness Training) and Construction Core classes.
One of the things I appreciated most was the environment and the people. My classmates came from different backgrounds, and it was interesting learning about their experiences and perspectives. The instructors were knowledgeable and made the classes engaging, which helped me stay focused even though classroom learning isn’t my style. I also earned my OSHA 10 certification, which added valuable knowledge about workplace safety and construction fundamentals. Right now, I’m focusing on my long-term goals while exploring opportunities in supply chain management and logistics, this industry that interests me because of how it connects transportation, operations, and business systems together. I’m also planning to pursue additional opportunities like apprenticeship programs and hands-on experience that will help me move forward in my career. One thing I’ve learned so far is that success doesn’t always happen immediately. Sometimes it’s a process of learning, adjusting, and staying patient while you prepare for the next opportunity.
Right now, it’s a waiting game, but I’m not waiting for things to happen to me. I’m using this time to prepare for what comes next. My journey is still developing, but programs like SER have helped me gain valuable experience, meet new people, and continue building the foundation for the future I’m working toward.”
Waymon’s story reflects the spirit of perseverance and growth that defines SERJobs members. By gaining practical skills, expanding his professional network, and remaining committed to his goals, Waymon is steadily building a pathway toward a career in logistics and supply chain management. We are proud to have been part of his journey and look forward to seeing the impact he will make as he continues to shape his future.
