SERJobs’ Success Story - Meet Michael B.
When Michael first connected with SERJobs, he was at a turning point in his life.
Living in a halfway house and working to rebuild after a difficult chapter, he was determined to move forward but the path wasn’t easy. Even the first step , enrolling in services, felt overwhelming. The digital application process proved to be a major barrier, and as the forms became more frustrating, so did the feeling that the system was working against him. At one point, Michael was ready to give up entirely.
But instead of letting him walk away, SERJobs met him where he was, literally.
A career coach visited Michael in person, sat down beside him, and walked him through the process step by step. Together, they completed the enrollment manually, removing the technological barrier that had nearly stopped him in his tracks. In that moment, what had felt impossible became manageable, and Michael chose to keep going.
Shortly after, he faced another setback. Unable to keep up with rent, he was forced to leave the halfway house. Once again, his stability was at risk.
Still, Michael did not give up.
With SERJobs’ support, he enrolled in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program that provided both technical training and a weekly stipend to help cover basic needs. With that critical support in place, he was able to focus on his future rather than survival. He committed himself fully to the program… showing up, putting in the work, and pushing forward despite the uncertainty.
That determination paid off.
Michael successfully completed his CDL training and secured stable, full-time employment. With a steady income, he was able to move out of temporary housing and into a place of his own, something that once felt out of reach. Soon after, he purchased a car, gaining not just transportation, but independence, mobility, and control over his future.
Today, Michael is no longer defined by the barriers he once faced. He is employed, housed, and moving forward with confidence.
He often reflects on how close he came to giving up and how one moment of support changed everything.
Michael’s story is a powerful reminder that transformation doesn’t happen all at once. It happens when someone is willing to meet you where you are, remove barriers, and walk alongside you as you rebuild.
