Second Servings Recap!
Another amazing turnout at our most recent Second Servings Pop-Up Grocery Store!
Dozens of Houstonians stopped by to stock up on fresh produce, meats, dairy, and more, all completely free of charge.
These events are about more than groceries. They’re about dignity, community, and making sure our members have access to the essentials that support their success.
A huge thank you to our incredible partners at Second Servings of Houston for continuing to show up and serve with heart.
SERJobs’ Success Story - Markiss’ Story
Several years ago, Markiss made a decision that would change his life: He moved to Houston with one goal in mind: to build a better future for himself and his children.
“I wanted to change my life,” he shared. “To do better, find a career, get an education, and establish myself, for me and for my kids.”
As a father, Markiss was driven by something bigger than himself. He wanted to be present, dependable, and a role model - someone his children could look up to. But like many individuals starting over, he wasn’t sure where to begin.
Markiss accomplished the first step: he earned his GED, a major milestone that brought him one step closer to his goals. Still, the question remained: what’s next?
That answer came when he was referred to SERJobs.
Just one month later, Markiss enrolled in welding training and for the first time, he felt he had found the right path. Through hands-on instruction, classroom learning, and the encouragement of instructors and peers, he began to build not only technical skills, but confidence in himself and his future.
“It was wonderful,” he said. “Great teachers from the beginning. I struggled at first, but having people around me to motivate me, from my classmates to my teachers… it’s been a blessing.”
Markiss stayed focused, determined to turn this opportunity into something lasting. His hard work paid off in a moment he’ll never forget.
Immediately after graduating, Markiss walked into a hiring event and was hired on the spot.
“To be able to go to my graduation, then walk right next door and get a job…that’s a blessing,” he said. “I had an adrenaline rush. I start Monday.”
Today, Markiss is not only employed, he is on a path toward stability, growth, and a future he once hoped for but couldn’t yet see. He is building a career that allows him to support his family, while stepping fully into the role he set out to be: a strong father and future husband.
His message to others is simple, but powerful:
“Keep yourself busy. Keep God first. And never give up - never, ever give up. Keep pushing.”
Markiss’ journey is a testament to what is possible when determination meets opportunity. With SERJobs’ support, he didn’t just find a job; he found direction, purpose, and a renewed sense of who he can become.
